Native to South Africa, haemanthus coccineus (amaryllidaceae), commonly known as April Fool, Blood Lily or Paintbrush Lily, is a vibrant species that emerges between February and April, before the two strap-like leaves appear. The flower heads (evolve into translucent berries), are large fleshy bulbs in blood red or scarlet, with a clump of yellow stamens.
