8987 - Leger, Trois femmesTrois femmes à la table rouge (1921)
By Fernand Léger
Estimated price: $5-7 million
Sold to benefit the Ray of Light Foundation.

In early May, Sotheby’s New York will be auctioning in its Impressionist and Modern Art Evening Sale a painting from the collection of the renowned singer-songwriter Madonna. Trois femmes à la table rouge by Fernand Léger is estimated at five to seven million dollars and comes to auction for the first time in more than two decades.

Léger painted Trois femmes à la table rouge in 1921, at the height of his iconic ‘Mechanical Elements’ series. The painting belongs to a group of works produced by the artist from 1920 which depict three women accompanied by still-life components. Over the subsequent two years, Léger’s rendering of his female subjects became increasingly abstracted and Trois femmes à la table rouge represents a unique Cubist moment for the artist, with its emphasis on strong colours and purified lines.

Other examples from this series are in the Dallas Museum of Art and the Beyeler Foundation in Basel, Switzerland. Proceeds from the sale of Trois femmes à la table rouge will go towards benefiting the Ray of Light Foundation that supports girls’ educational projects in Afghanistan, Pakistan and other countries.

In the entertainer’s own words: “I have a great passion for art and a great passion for education… I would like to share these two passions…
I want to trade something valuable for something invaluable – educating girls! Knowledge is power. Let’s change the world!”

Sotheby’s New York Impressionist and Modern Art Evening Sale will be held on May 7, 2013. For more information, log on to http://www.sothebys.com.
