An important work by leading international contemporary artist Bharti Kher (b 1969) is to be sold to support The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation’s environmental and wildlife conservation efforts.
Bharti Kher’s work, The Skin Speaks a Language Not Its Own (2006) is a life-size model of an elephant covered in applied bindis. One of three versions made by the artist and the last remaining in private hands, the majestic animal is shown lying down and at rest.
The work can be seen as a monumental tribute to the Subcontinent, a fitting metaphor for the tensions and energy to be found here. At the same time, the tender intimacy of this female elephant, a gentle animal often associated with compassion and wisdom, is shown with her head to the side as though death were imminent. The elephant is a timeless symbol of the changes in mankind’s relationship with nature during the age of modernisation and a perfect illustration of the aims of the Foundation for whom it has been gifted for sale.
The Foundation will also be selling works by 31 other leading contemporary artists including Banksy, Peter Beard, George Condo, Zeng Fanzhi, Urs Fischer, Mark Grotjahn, Andreas Gursky, Richard Prince, Ed Ruscha, Julian Schnabel and Rudolf Stingel.
Christie’s, in partnership with the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, presents The 11th Hour Charity Auction at Rockefeller Plaza, New York tomorrow, May 13. For more information please visit http://www.christies.com.
