Noor Jehan Road lies perpendicular to Lahore’s fashionable MM Alam Road, stretching between Hussain Chowk and Gaddafi Stadium. It is named after the legendary diva and ‘Queen of Melody’, Noor Jehan who once owned a palatial home there.
Shopping options – old and new… Several popular stores are located along Noor Jehan Road, including Al-Fatah – Lahore’s answer to Karachi’s Agha’s Supermarket – and H. Karim Buksh, an iconic departmental store which has been there since the 1950s. A more recent addition is Big City (a multi-storey shopping centre built on the site where Noor Jehan’s home once stood) which is well known for stores dealing in high-end products such as Apple computers and Rolex watches.
Eat your heart out… There is plenty of choice in and around the neighbourhood when it comes to satisfying the appetite. Along with a few high-end restaurants and cafés, Noor Jehan Road has a large selection of desi treats, including kabab-parathas at Bundu Khan, shawarmas at Paradise, paratha rolls at Silver Spoon and halwa puri at Capri Restaurant. Don’t forget to polish it all off with Lahore’s ‘unmatchable’ falooda at Benazir Kulfa. If you are looking for low-fat options, you will have to settle for corn on the cob prepared in quintessential Lahore-style, and sold at several challiwala stands along the road.
At ‘liberty’ to shop… Lahore’s favourite market, Liberty is located at one end of the road and shoppers sometimes spend hours in shops that sell everything including homeware, clothes, fabric, fashion accessories, shoes and more.
Books and more… Those of you who are more literarily inclined can flock to Variety Stores – one of the best bookstores in the city. The store’s name speaks for itself, given the large variety of books available there, no matter what your genre of choice may be. Several flower shops are located nearby, as well as those selling DVDs and CDs.
In a nutshell… Although often referred to as ‘Liberty’ (because of the market) Noor Jehan Road has long been an essential part of Gulberg and Lahore’s retail and commercial activity. The area is centrally located and rapidly changing to keep up with new trends, and this keeps the area relevant and buzzing with activity.
