Travel_iconThe world of F1 is about to take a tour across Europe, passing through seven destinations across the continent before going on to the next series of races across South East Asia.

If you are planning a European excursion, here is a list of must-attend races that will be taking place between now and September:

  • Monaco (May 26): Racing’s crown jewel is undoubtedly the Monaco Grand Prix. Monte Carlo has hosted races since the 1920s and tourists (who can afford it) flock to the second smallest country in the world every year to enjoy the various fashion shows and yacht parties taking place all weekend long. However, don’t let the fun fool you: according to drivers, the narrow streets and tight corners make driving in Monaco like driving a bike around a living room. Continue reading →

With Holi, the Hindu festival of spring, being celebrated on March 27, it is appropriate to pay homage to the DJ Science College, which is named after Diwan Deyawan Jethmal, a prominent Hindu philanthropist of his time.

From arts to science… The DJ Science College was established as the Sind Arts College. Its campus was initially located on MA Jinnah Road, and was opened on January 17, 1887 by Lord Reay, the Governor of Bombay. The college had been funded by a several prominent Hindus including Jethmal, and after he passed away, it was renamed after him. Continue reading →

If you find yourself on main Shahrah-e-Iraq, look east. Through the din and smog that defines the heart of Saddar, the horizon offers an incongruous sight; St Patrick’s Cathedral flanked on one side by the sprawling yet serene campus of St Joseph’s Convent School (SJC).

Educating women for over 150 years… SJC was founded in 1862 by Monsignor Steins, the Vicar Apostolic of Bombay and five Sisters of the Cross who came to Karachi from Belgium for missionary work. The school has educated thousands of prominent Pakistani women ever since, including Uzma Aslam Khan, Dr Hamida Khuhro, Maria B, Marvi Memon, Mehreen Jabbar, Sania Saeed, Maliha Lodhi, and Zubeida Mustafa.

A serene campus… The campus consists of several buildings, of which the most imposing is the earth-toned Main Building, believed to be designed by an Italian architect called Father Pagani in the ‘Italianate’ style, complete with arches and columns. Several classrooms and hallways are located on the ground floor, while a small chapel and the nuns’ living area is on the first floor. Continue reading →

The 2012 Vintage and Classic Car Show, organised by the Vintage and Classic Car Club of Pakistan (VCCCP) will be held today at The Forum car park. And although there will be a fleet of vintage beauties on display, it is likely that the two cars that will steal the show will be the same ones which received accolades at the Concours d’Elegance, an annual international vintage car show that was held in Kuwait in February.

The first car is an open topped 1924 Rolls Royce which earned the first prize in the A Class (cars manufactured between 1910 and 1930). Originally owned by the Nawab of Bahawalpur, it is incorrectly assumed to belong to Mr Jinnah; the truth is that he rode in it only once with Lord Louis Mountbatten on August 14, 1947.

The second car is a 1929 Hupmobile; it secured third place in the A Class (a Cord Cabriolet from Belgium secured second place). Originally owned by Qurban Ali Khan, the first Inspector General of West Pakistan, the Hupmobile and the Rolls Royce now belong to Abdul-Karim Chhapra.

This was Pakistan’s first foray into the highly competitive world of vintage auto shows. In an all too familiar scenario, this was not due to any support from the government; instead, the credit goes to Abdul-Karim Chhapra and Mohsin Ikram (senior members of the VCCCP) for sending these cars to the Concours d’Elegance.

In addition to these two cars, the line-up at this year’s Vintage and Classic Car Show will include a fleet of magnificent beauties including Bentleys, BMWs, Jaguars, Lincolns, Mercedes’, Packards, Rolls Royces and Studebakers to name a few. You can also expect to see smaller but equally impressive cars such as Fiat 500s, Isettas and Mini Coopers.

The Show will begin at around noon and will carry on late into the evening. With rock music, an enthusiastic crowd of car lovers, beautiful cars from all eras and two prize winning classics, the 2012 Show promises to be big!
